Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The Challenger interior was redesigned for the 2015 model year with a driver-centric layout, straightforward switchgear, and better materials. The SRT twins have standard leather finery, unique badging and gauge colors, and heated and ventilated front seats. Despite its roomy cabin, the plastics still look cheap, and visibility to the rear is poor. Although it has the same trunk volume as the BMW M4, the Dodge held two more carry-ons in its trunk (six) and an impressive 15 with the rear seat stowed—three more than the GT350. None of the cars we tested were particularly adept at storing small items, but the Challenger at least has a big center-console bin, and there’s a useful slot to stick a smartphone.
Dodge
It’ll come with a big crate of parts to tweak it for the drag strip
In the fourth video teaser, «Crate,» which you can watch below, Dodge reveals that the Demon will come with a big box of goodies—namely, the tools and parts necessary to set the Demon up for drag racing. Watching the video, we see our helmeted driver pulling out the necessary tools to do a wheel swap, and it seems the box contains two very narrow front-runner-style wheels and tires. Our hunch: The Demon comes off the production line wearing four DOT-approved drag radials so you can legally drive it to the drag strip. Once you get there, you can swap on the front skinnies (which aren’t street legal) and have a second set of fresh rear tires for when you burn through the first ones. We wonder what other goodies are in that big Demon box.
It might offer some kind of Race Gas Mode [UPDATE: This is now confirmed, see above from April 6]
We know the Challenger SRT Demon will be built to drag race—the very first teasers warned readers that the Demon is for «a subculture of enthusiasts who know that a tenth is a car and a half second is your reputation.» It sounds like they’re talking about the quarter-mile, and maybe about the somewhat-illicit practice of racing for pink slips?
Here’s where we tiptoe into the realm of speculation. Let’s look again at the very first teaser video, «Cage.»
This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.
Note the moment when they release the Michael Bay-lookin’ creature from its cage. The hellish cat-machine stalks up to a racing-style quick-fill fuel can with a hazard label on it.
Our mecha-hell-kitty takes a big bite out of the can, then lines up for some kind of robo-muscle-creature-car drag race.
This, of course, got folks all revved up on the idea that the SRT Demon will offer a specific engine mode for use with high-octane racing gas. It’s not an entirely crazy thought: Forced-induction engines like the 707-horsepower supercharged 6.2-liter V8 in the SRT Hellcat love added octane, and a tune specifically developed to take advantage of race gas could make for a nice boost in power. And, well, just look at the tagline on the pop-up website:
«High octane videos,» you say?
And while we can’t necessarily trust some random Instagrammers at their word, a few folks on the social media site seem to have caught a glimpse of a wider, fat-tired Challenger of some sort in various stages of uncovered.

Our guy Sinister_Z07, in particular, makes note of a «Race Gas» button, though he doesn’t point out which button he’s talking about. The other details add up, though. Notice how the wider hood scoop and the add-on fender flares jibe with both the Fate of the Furious cars and the cutaway rendering released by Dodge. And the wheel in Sinister_Z07’s close-up looks mighty similar to the wheel in the constantly-looping burnout animation on ifyouknowyouknow.com:
As for the tires themselves? They sure look like Nitto NT05R drag radials to us. Check out the sidewall (of what we assume is a front wheel) in the Instagram post: You can see the Nitto logo.
Oh hell yeah it’s got a giant ram-air hood scoop
In Dodge’s weekly tidbit-dropping on February 9th, the automaker published a few new Demon photos and a bold (if esoteric) claim: The Demon has «the largest functional ‘Air Grabber’ cold air intake hood ever installed on a production vehicle, measuring more than 45 square inches,» ducted and sealed to feed a larger air box as compared to the regular Hellcat. The Demon also sports twin «Air Catcher» headlamps—the inboard headlights are just LED rings with open centers for better airflow—whereas the regular Hellcat only had one on the driver’s side. Dodge claims these upgrades drop the Demon’s air intake temperature by 30 degrees compared to the regular Challenger Hellcat.
Hey but wait, hold up: Check out that first picture. Is that a passenger seat next to our helmeted hero? What about the rumor we heard that the Demon would ditch every passenger seat to lose weight? Hmmmm.
Overview
The Challenger SRT Demon is even mightier than the Hellcat version, boasting up to 840 horsepower and exclusive drag-racing equipment. Did we mention that it can do a wheelie, too? While the limited-edition Demon went out of production after the 2018 model year, it remains one of the coolest and craziest cars to ever wear a Dodge badge. Many of its engine and transmission goodies are now available on the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye. Still, even the most powerful pony-car competitors, such as the 650-hp Chevy Camaro ZL1 and the all-new 700-plus-horsepower Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, will be hard-pressed to match the straight-line acceleration of the Demon.
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
The Challenger’s coverage aligns with domestic rivals. Compared with BMW and Porsche, it has less limited protection but a better powertrain plan.
- Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
- Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
- No complimentary scheduled maintenance

The standard Hellcat gets a power bump too.
Following yesterday’s teaser, Dodge has fully revealed the 2019 Challenger and Challenger SRT Hellcat models. A lot is happening with the muscle family, as the automaker is happy to introduce “the most powerful, quickest, and fastest muscle car”: the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye.
Jumping directly into Demon territory, the new range-topper features the most powerful production V8 engine with 797 horsepower (594 kilowatts) and 707 pound-feet (958 Newton-meters) of torque. It is the same engine that powers the Demon, a supercharged 6.2-liter V8, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with an upgraded torque converter that delivers an 18-percent increase in torque multiplication.
Dodge says the V8 engine has 25 major component upgrades, including a larger supercharger (claimed to be the largest factory supercharger with a volume of 2.7 liters), strengthened connecting rods and pistons, high-speed valve train, fuel injection system, and improved lubrication system. Boost pressure has been increased from 11.6 psi to 14.5 psi, while the rev limiter now kicks in at 6,500 rpm instead of 6,200 rpm.
This powerful setup provides impressive acceleration from a standstill: 60 miles per hour (0-96 kilometers per hour) happens in just 3.4 seconds en route to an incredible top speed of 203 mph (327 kph). The quarter-mile time of 10.8 seconds at 131 mph (211 kph) puts the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye just 1.15 seconds behind the limited-run Demon on the drag strip.
Interestingly, at full throttle, the car consumes 1.43 gallons per minute (5.4 liters per minute) of fuel, enough to drain the fuel tank in just under 11 minutes. However, it’s still rated at 22 miles per gallon under normal highway conditions.
The new Redeye range-topper actually heralds the most powerful Challenger SRT Hellcat lineup ever. It is joined by the 2019 Challenger SRT Hellcat, which now boasts 717 hp (535 kW) and 656 lb-ft (890 Nm) of torque. The series also gets a new distinctive dual-snorkel hood design, which pays homage to the mid-1960s and early-1970s Dodge muscle cars, like the 1970 Dart Swinger and 1971 Demon.
For 2019, the Challenger SRT Hellcat and R/T Scat Pack models will be also available with the Widebody Package introduced in 2018. It brings wider fender flares by 3.5 inches for a more muscular appearance, which can be combined with a new Satin Black spoiler. As standard, 2019 SRT Hellcat models come with 20-inch lightweight performance wheels, while vehicles equipped with the Widebody Package will get wider 305/35ZR20 Pirelli P-Zero tires.
Production of the revised Challenger lineup will begin at Dodge’s Brampton Assembly Plant this fall, with deliveries scheduled to kick off in the fourth quarter of the year.
Take a look at the press release section for additional details.

It’s the widebody Challenger SRT Hellcat we’ve all been waiting for
For months now, rumors have been swirling that Dodge is planning some kind of widebody Challenger SRT Hellcat. Folks speculated that this lateral growth would allow Dodge to fit some seriously wide tires under the Challenger (recall that the regular Challenger SRT Hellcat makes do with a measly 275-width rear tire that can hardly stand up to the power even in normal daily driving).
There was even a guess at the ultra-Challenger’s name: Challenger ADR, which, we were told, would stand for American Drag Racer. It would be a nod at another famous Mopar acronym, ACR, or American Club Racer, most recently seen on the most outrageously track-prepped Viper to roll off the assembly line.
Then we seemingly got visual confirmation from, of all places, a Fast & Furious movie trailer. Take a close look: There’s a scene in this Fate of the Furious (aka Furious 8) trailer where the entire Toretto family drives a phalanx of flared, hood-scooped Challengers.
Update, 1/19: And then Autoweek discovered a behind-the-scenes video from the Furious 8 set that shows an even clearer view of the silver movie cars and, yep, those sure look like our SRT Demon:
This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.
Update, 1/27: Yep, Dodge confirms it’s the widebody. Today, the automaker informed us that the Demon will be a full 3.5 inches wider than the regular Challenger and SRT Hellcat, and released the rear image you see above. Wide, indeed.
2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon Performance
Dodge removed approximately 200 lbs of weight from the Demon in order to improve performance. Most of that weight reduction comes from lighter-weight wheels and brakes. While it’s still not a light car, the Demon’s weight reduction will be much appreciated at the drag strip and on the racetrack.
The video Dodge released highlighting the weight reduction of the car also shows — briefly — some of the under-the-shell components. There was talk that the new SRT Demon would be all-wheel drive to improve traction, but based on that video it doesn’t look like there’s an all-wheel drive system there.
Some of the spy shots we’ve seen of what appears to be a Demon fully-exposed shows some super sticky, barely street legal tires. While they’ll be rubbish in the rain, a stickier set of tires, especially if they’re wider, would help performance a lot.
We do believe the tires will be wider, too, because those same spy shots show wider fender flares on the new car. A wide body kit would be needed to house the bigger wheels and tires.
The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon will be the first production car to have drag radials from the factory. They are 18 x 11-inch wheels and “Demon Branded” 315/40R18 Nitto NT05R tires front and rear.
Dodge removed 232 pounds of weight from the vehicle to make the SRT Demon 215 pounds less heavy than the Challenger SRT Hellcat. Some components, like the brakes, are actually smaller and less-effective. This is purely going to be a drag car, and probably too bonkers to drive every day.
Each person who buys a Demon gets a customized plate with their name. They also get a tool kit with Demon-branded tools to set up their car for the street or for the drag strip.
We also have reason to believe, based on what CEO Tim Kuniskis has said in the past about 1/4 mile times and reputation that the Dodge Challenger Demon will be an automatic transmission only car.
A video called “Lock and Load” confirms that the Demon will have an automatic transmission brake, meaning a manual transmission is extremely unlikely.
Combined with the tires, the Demon has some serious driveline components that increase the launch thrust of the car 35% more than that of the Hellcat.
Different drive modes, including an all-new Drag Mode, help eek out every last bit of performance from the Demon. But it’s not designed to be all-things to all-buyers, but rather a car setup to dominate at the drag strip first and foremost.
In addition to a cool Demon-branded harness bar, the Demon has seriously upgraded race-hardened performance parts.
Speaking of cool stuff, keeping the car cool run after run is extremely important. In the Performance Pages, there’s a race cool down function that does just that. Additionally, there are all sorts of drag mode settings in the Performance Pages for each driver to set up their Demon the exact way they want it.
A Torque Reserve system helps improve launches by priming the supercharger without the rear wheels braking traction.
To keep intake temperatures low, the Demon uses the car’s air conditioner to keep things cool.
The Demon will run on 100 octane high-output race gas right from the factory.
